Problems with Dialysis

Back to Problems with Dialysis

Kidney patients are prone to develop heart disease and heart disease is most often the leading cause of death among kidney patients. In many instances, the causes for kidney failure (such as, high blood pressure), also contribute to heart disease. So damage to the heart and kidneys may occur at the same time. In other cases, problems associated with kidney failure (such as, fluid retension and uremic toxic buildup) may result in damage to the heart until diagnosis and dialysis treatment is begun.

While on dialysis, kidney patients can help to prevent further damage to their heart by:

Stop smoking

Control your diet

Avoid fluid overload

Exercise regularly
